It took place in 1730 in the village of Khejarli near Jodhpur, Rajasthan, when members of the Bishnoi community sacrificed their lives to protect trees from being cut down.
Origins in Rajasthan
The movement began when the king of Jodhpur, Maharaja Abhay Singh, ordered the felling of Khejri trees (Prosopis cineraria) to obtain wood for the construction of his palace. When the royal workers arrived in Khejarli village to cut the trees, they encountered resistance from the local Bishnoi community, whose religious beliefs emphasize the protection of nature, wildlife, and all living beings.
The Sacrifice of Amrita Devi
The resistance was led by Amrita Devi Bishnoi, a devoted member of the Bishnoi community. She refused to allow the trees to be cut and famously declared:
"A chopped head is cheaper than a felled tree."
To prevent the destruction of the trees, Amrita Devi embraced a Khejri tree and was executed by the royal soldiers. Inspired by her courage, her three daughters and hundreds of other Bishnoi villagers followed her example. In total, 363 Bishnoi men, women, and children sacrificed their lives while protecting the trees.
Impact and the Royal Decree
The sacrifice at Khejarli shocked the ruler of Jodhpur. After learning about the incident, Maharaja Abhay Singh ordered an immediate halt to tree felling in Bishnoi villages and issued a decree protecting trees and wildlife in areas inhabited by the Bishnoi community.
The Khejarli Massacre is considered one of the world's earliest recorded environmental movements and became a powerful symbol of ecological conservation and community-led environmental protection. The values demonstrated by the Bishnoi community—respect for nature, biodiversity conservation, and willingness to sacrifice for the environment—continue to inspire environmental movements worldwide, including the later Chipko Movement.
A Timeless Legacy
Today, the legacy of Khejarli is commemorated annually through the Khejarli Shaheed Mela, which honors the memory of the 363 martyrs and promotes environmental awareness and tree conservation.
The Khejarli sacrifice remains a timeless reminder that protecting nature is not merely an environmental responsibility—it is a commitment to preserving life itself.
